Poetry Post

There are a lot of days where, for lack of time or energy, my heart cries out in rhyme. So I thought I'd share a few recent musings, with the hope that they may be edifying. Enjoy!

Morning Cry

And what shall we say of this new day’s
                Horizon? Your eyes speak your heart.
                Depart, cold night, and let the sun rise!
And what shall we say of flaming skies?
                They leap over plains like a hind;
                Do not mind the rains of earlier hours.
And what shall come from this new dawn?
                Have memory and time collapsed its rays
                Before it comes?

Do not fear the day, as if it shall pass by the same.

Yesterday came, along with a disquieting gaze;
                But we live by faith in what will come,
                And cast hindsight away.
Awake, now, you child of light; test not the
                Spirit within, and give today tomorrow’s hope,
                And rest.
We shall say of thunders that they are friends,
                Of storms and darkened skies that they
                Are allies.
We shall ride on winds and sing in nights
                On weather-beaten drums.
                Come, the sun has kept its word.

Now rise.

Temple

You did not choose a throne
                Of polished wood or stone,
You did not choose a tree
                Or house or canopy,
You did not choose to dwell
                In rivers or in gold;
Instead of these as home,
                You have chosen me.

An Ascent

He has brought me many blessings,
            And authored many pains;
            In both his power rises,
            In both his grace sustains.
He has promised many pleasures,
            Along with many tests;
            In both, he makes me treasure;
            In both, my spirit rests.
He has purchased many sinners,
            And carried them away;
            In time a new beginning
            Will bring me there to stay.

Deep to Deep

He desires thy communion,
            To count thee as a friend;
            But weak art thou to imagine,
            Or labor to comprehend!
Thy powers art near-sighted
            To also see his hope
            That all mankind would know him
            And hear him in their souls.
Thou art not free of earth,
            Thy love for it still stays;
            Yet heaven’s king is longing
            To meet thee in each day.
Thy errand is submission—
            Wholesome, devout, blessed—
            Within the heart of Yahweh;
            In kneeling is thy rest.

A Revival Prayer

Haste to me, my Holy friend,
            My sovereign one, who sees
            All things that are, and will end,
            As your word justly decrees.
Come draw near, though I have failed
            To give you praise, and laud;
            Rather, in me has the flesh prevailed
            To honor lesser gods.
Forgive me now, a worthless breath,
            And keep me for your own;
            Turn this heart and life from death
            To worship at your throne.
Be my help, for I am weak
            To follow hard after your name;
            So be the treasure that I seek,
            And in each day, the flame.
